Andrew Read - Director of Diocesan Education and DEMAT CEO
Andrew has Cambridge degrees in education and education management, and has taught, led, and managed in all phases, and has 12 years’ experience leading Ofsted inspections. A staunch believer in formulating practice from evidence-based research, he has had extensive involvement in higher education, and is an established author. In the last decade he has acted as an advisor to government, provided management support to 80+ local authorities/academy groups, worked directly with more than 5000 schools, spent a decade serving as a director within the commercial sector, is a past and current trustee for numerous charitable trusts, and has been a governor in a number of schools of different phases. Andrew lives near Cambridge with his teaching wife and a young son. Andrew is designated as Accounting Officer of DEMAT in his role as Chief Executive Officer, as well as undertaking the role of Director of Education for the Diocese of Ely. Above all else Andrew is a passionate campaigner for the rights of all children to a good education, regardless of location, circumstance or religion.
Teresa Stephens - Executive Assistant
Teresa joined DEMAT in September 2017 as Executive Assistant to the CEO. Teresa has many years’ experience as a Personal Assistant/Executive Assistant in media, working for film companies such as The Walt Disney Company Ltd and Rank Films Ltd, and was a Broadcast Co-ordinator for the worldwide television broadcast of Rugby Union and the Premier League. More recently, Teresa has worked as Executive Assistant for the Director of Nursing at Papworth Hospital and as Exams Officer in a secondary/sixth form school. Teresa holds a Degree in English Literature.
Teresa is married, with one son at University, and a little known fact about her is that she has in the past performed as the Disney characters; Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Grumpy and Dopey!
Jacqueline McCamphill - Director of Trust Development
Jacqueline joined DEMAT in November 2016 as a part time consultant and became the Assistant Director for Innovation and Business Development in April 2017. She joined the Trust because she was attracted to its ethos, vision, values and high-quality team in their pursuance of improving outcomes for children and young people, which so closely align with her own.
In August 2018 Jacqueline became the Director of Trust Development, where she has accountability for Trust Governance, Conversions, Estates and Business Development opportunities including stakeholder management. Prior to this, she was appointed by Trustees to be the Chief Executive of the Eastern Leadership Centre (a Cambridge educational charity) to lead the charity closure: she was successful in leading a solvent closedown of the charity from April 2016 to April 2017, working with key Trustees.
This executive role has followed 17 years of senior management experience across the charity, government and private sectors:
- Senior Manager at the Eastern Leadership Centre, working with national charity partners and local government-related sold service provision, specifically around national school governance
- Regional Manager for the East Region for the national Training and Development Agency (TDA) on workforce development and ‘every child matters’ initiatives
- Bursar at Hinchingbrooke Secondary School in Huntingdon.
Jacqueline’s experience is very diverse, and she started her professional career as a town planner for Severn Trent Water Ltd. Alongside her current role, she is a school governor at two schools, and is married with two children.
Owen Rhodes - School Improvement Director
Owen joined DEMAT in September 2017 as School Improvement Director. He is an experienced former headteacher who has worked in primary schools in Cambridgeshire and Surrey over the last 20 years. He has successfully improved schools in challenging circumstances, through focusing on improving the quality of teaching, and developing effective teams who are committed to improving children’s academic and social achievements. Owen strongly believes in the significant benefits and impact of school to school support. As Chair of the Wisbech Schools’ Partnership, he has led a number of projects aiming to improve outcomes for children across the locality. He also has previous experience as a secondary school governor, and as a mentor to newly appointed headteachers.
Alex Rutterford-Duffety - Director of Finance & HR
Alex joined DEMAT in September 2017 as Assistant Director of Finance. Alex qualified as a Chartered Accountant in the Audit department at Deloitte in Cambridge, and gained post-qualification experience at businesses within the Cambridge area. During her training, Alex had exposure to large Cambridge corporates, including working on annual audits, interim reviews and assisting in implementing control frameworks.
In August 2018, Alex took on the post of Director of Finance at DEMAT, and saw the HR function join her Directorate. Alex believes that education offers the greatest opportunity for all children, collectively and individually to unlock their potential, regardless of their start in life. It was in this belief that Alex joined her local school as a Governor in 2015, and so was eager to join DEMAT as she believes they share a common goal of furthering young people’s education through collaboration, support & challenge.
Amy Weaver - Director of Inclusion and Safeguarding
Amy joined DEMAT in October 2017. Her education experience has ranged from primary through to Key Stage 5, across mainstream & specialist settings in three countries. She has been responsible for the leadership of SEND, achievement of vulnerable groups and Child Protection for nearly 15 years. Alongside her practical experience, Amy gained a Post Graduate Certificate in Education and Masters of Arts in Education (Equality & Diversity).
Whether moving to a secondary school in challenging circumstances, working with primary aged pupils with Social, Emotional or Mental Health needs, or running an outstanding provision designed to enable students with Autistic Spectrum Conditions (who would otherwise be out of education, excluded or in a special school) to access a mainstream setting, one principle has remained her clearest vision for inclusion:
“Sameness is not fairness: Fairness is not giving everyone the same thing. Fairness is giving each person what they need to succeed”
With the challenges faced by teachers and school leaders in today’s education system, this principle becomes ever more difficult to enact, but even more necessary to maintain. Amy is dedicated to school improvement, and to working with and in schools to ensure all children and young people are safe, secure and supported to achieve their potential.
Annabelle Evans - Legal and Property Manager
Annabelle is a solicitor with over 15 years’ experience specialising in property matters. Prior to joining DEMAT in May 2016, she worked at Mills & Reeve Solicitors LLP in Cambridge within the agriculture and landed estates team, dealing with a variety of property transactions involving agriculture, commercial and residential matters, and acted for a diverse range of clients including charities, Cambridge and Oxford Colleges, investment companies and individual landowners. She joined the DEMAT team as the Legal and Property Manager and is also the Company Secretary.
Rachael Lamb - Building Surveyor
Rachael is the Building Surveyor for DEMAT, joining the team in December 2018, and has had over 25 years’ experience in technical roles, including posts in local government, private practice and Norwich Diocese. These roles have encompassed the management, maintenance and development of private and public sector housing, historic public buildings, churches, schools and academies. She has a 1st class Honours degree in Building Surveying, a Masters degree with distinction in Historic Building Conservation and holds chartered status with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. Rachael and her partner live in Attleborough, Norfolk and have a 9 year old son whom they home-educate. Rachael’s aims are to assist the Trust in maintaining their buildings in a good state, to elevate the quality of teaching spaces in order to provide the best environment possible to promote learning, and to support teaching staff in building matters.
Kitt Smith - Administrator
Kitt joined DEMAT in April 2017 and has worked in the Education sector for the last 4 years. She worked for 2 years at the Eastern Leadership Centre (ELC) providing support for School Governance, and then went on to work for the National Governors Association for a short time. Prior to that Kitt has had over 25 years’ experience of administration roles in many industries, amongst them IT, financial and public services industries. Kitt took a short break some years ago to run a business with her husband, where she gained experience in running a small company.
Naomi Webb - Support Officer
Naomi joined DEMAT in January 2018. She has 20+ years’ administration experience gained from working within Local Government and the NHS. Naomi has also worked for a national funding organisation where she assisted not-for-profit organisations, charities and schools in applying for funding. More recently she has worked as Clerk to Governors at a local college, assisting them with school governance.
Karen Tozer - School Effectiveness Officer (Maths)
When asked to write her core purpose in one sentence, this is what Karen wrote. Her vision is clear – every child should be given every opportunity to learn, understand and enjoy maths, both within and outside of the classroom.
Karen took up teaching as a second career following work in both local and national government departments. She quickly took on the role of maths subject lead in a large primary school, overseeing the implementation of the new curriculum and guiding all staff on how to teach to mastery. She has taught across both Key Stages, but considers herself more of an Upper Key Stage 2 specialist. In 2016, Karen was approached by the University of Bedfordshire and asked to lecture on the Applied Education Studies course in maths – teaching adults how to teach maths to children!
Karen joined DEMAT as School Improvement Officer in maths in September 2017 to fulfil her ambition for every child to enjoy and achieve in maths.
Outside of work, Karen is married with a daughter, she is a leisurely swimmer, cyclist and walker who is a keen cook and an amateur DIYer!
Claire Gray - School Effectiveness Officer (Leadership and Management)
Claire has led teams in small village and large city schools across Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire and Derby. She has successfully driven school improvement by implementing strategic plans which have prioritised the following; rapidly increasing phonic attainment, diminishing gender differences in achievement, staff well-being, developing and embedding high quality responsive teaching and learning, coaching and improving middle and senior leadership.
As an outstanding teacher Claire has taught across EYFS, KS1 and KS2 in small and large schools and knows the opportunities and challenges that this can bring. Whilst committed to pupils achieving the very best possible outcomes through quality first teaching she is also passionate about inspiring high aspirations for their future by providing an exciting, creative, nurturing environment in which to learn.
Catherine Wilkinson - School Effectiveness Officer (EYFS)
Catherine joined us as Schools Effectiveness Officer for EYFS in September 2018. She qualified as a teacher in 2001 and spent the majority of her teaching career teaching and managing EYFS. She has worked in a range of schools from 1 form to 3 form entry, across diverse catchment areas from suburban to inner city. She is also a qualified forest school leader.
When asked about her position Catherine said “We all know how important and influential the early years of education are, as they establish a love of learning and a thirst for knowledge that lasts throughout a child’s educational journey. I feel it is such a privilege to be a child’s first teacher at school and I am excited to be a part of the fantastic work happening in EYFS across DEMAT”
Joanne Patterson - DPO and H&S Officer
Joanne is the Trust’s Data Protection Officer and Health and Safety Officer. Joanne strategically ensures all health and safety matters and controls are in place, and also carries out the role of DPO, supporting the schools to ensure they are aware of their responsibilities and reporting needs to comply with GDPR. Joanne’s strength is her ability to assess a situation and proactively generate and implement solutions in a professional and ethical manner. She is CSBM, NEBOSH, Tech IOSH qualified and also holds the Practitioner Certificate in Data Protection, and has over 17 years’ experience in the Education sector. Prior to working for DEMAT Joanne worked in industry for 18 years.
Sally Batchelder - Administrator (School Improvement)
Sally joined the DEMAT Central Team in June 2018, having previously worked in a rural DEMAT school. She has over 20 years of administration experience, including over 7 years’ working in a private school. Sally has also worked as an Office Manager for the Ministry of Defence and as Clerical & Services Manager for Essex Police, managing administration, caretaking, vehicles, property and custody suites across a busy division of 5 police stations.
Tracy Loker - Finance Manager
Tracy joined DEMAT in July 2018. She has worked in hotels for 10.5 years and during her last three years was lucky enough to be the General Manager of a Best Western hotel. This gave her the access to work and begin to learn accountancy whilst having to build and maintain budgets of her own. Over the last 18 months Tracy has been able to widen her accountancy knowledge and gain further experience whilst working as an Accounts Assistant at Marshall Aerospace and Defence group. Outside of work, nothing is more important to Tracy than spending time with her husband and their families.
Nathanael Purtill-Lewarne - Assistant Finance Manager
Nathanael joined DEMAT in September 2017 to assist the Finance Department and collaborate with the central team to support the Trust’s values and goals.
In 2013 Nathanael joined Robinson Young Ltd as a trainee accountant and focused his attention on growing and developing his career in finance and accounting. He is now part-qualified AAT.
Having previously worked with start-up companies, Nathanael owned and successfully sold his own internet business. He enjoys a challenge and is curious to try new things. In recent roles he has suggested, then implemented, policy changes and introduced new approaches to working, either through leaning on experience or putting forward a new idea.
Outside of work, Nathanael is an avid cyclist and a passionate foodie! In 2009 he cycled across Europe, from Dover to the Black Sea, crossing through 12 countries. Following this adventure, his next aspiration is to combine his passions and cycle the length of Italy, sampling many of the local specialities along the way…!
Thecla Nchia - Finance Assistant
Thecla has approximately 5 years’ experience of working in Finance. After obtaining her MBA from Cardiff University in 2012, she worked as a healthcare assistant for the NHS for almost 2 years, alongside being a 3 days volunteer in their Finance Department. After 2 months of being a volunteer she landed a temporary Finance Assistant role with NHS Improvement where she assisted in the audits.
Prior to joining DEMAT, Thecla worked for Zinwave Limited in Harston as a Finance Assistant/Office Manager.
Oliver Featherstone - Finance Assistant
Oliver joined DEMAT in March 2018 as a Finance Assistant. He previously worked for Execujet UK as an Accounts Assistant. His roles included producing management accounts and distribution reports for lead pilots and owners of the jets in Denmark, Switzerland and UK. He has also worked in human factors testing medical devices for pharmaceutical companies.
Oliver has a degree in Mathematics and Statistics BSc (Hons) and loves to play golf, mountain biking and socialising with friends.
Maxine Flynn - HR Manager
Maxine joined DEMAT in September 2018 as the Trust HR Manager after working at Education Personnel Management for nearly 10 years, and within a secondary school prior to that. She is a qualified member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development, having specialised in HR management.
Prior to working in the education sector, Maxine worked within the financial services sector to support investment fund management companies with compliance, training and development issues.
Outside of work, Maxine is a keen volunteer and over the past 3 years has supported the St Ives Swimming Club, both on the Committee and as a Team Manager. Previously she has also volunteered for a London-based theatre company and the National Childbirth Trust.
Laura Barton - HR Co-ordinator
Laura joined DEMAT in June 2018. She is an experienced HR and Recruitment Officer and has worked within the Education sector for 3.5 years. She is a very ambitious and driven individual and focused on pursuing a career in the field of HR, with a ‘can do’ attitude and the necessary drive to motivate herself to carry out any required tasks and activities in a timely and efficient manner. She enjoys puzzle solving and working with others towards a common aim. Prior to this Laura worked within the Hospitality Industry where she learnt the importance of Customer Satisfaction and the ability to understand and effectively respond to the objectives set. Outside of work, Laura is married and has two young children, Noah and Max. In the summer she spends most of her weekends supporting her husband at cricket (a sport she feels both boys will be encouraged to play when old enough!)
Denise Woodhouse - Social Emotional and Mental Health Support Officer
Denise joined DEMAT as a Social Emotional and Mental Health Support Officer in June 2018 as part of the School Improvement Team. She has worked in education, from preschool to post-age 16 children, for over 15 years, beginning as an Assessor and Internal Verifier for work-based learning students in Essex before moving to Cambridgeshire to live. Whilst raising her young family, Denise worked on a voluntary basis within her community, creating and delivering interactive educational early years learning sessions for parents and children. This led to an opportunity to become a Director for a Community Interest Company delivering Healthy Eating learning programmes to develop confidence, self-esteem and essential life skills for preschool age children, their parents and primary and secondary age children as part of their PSHE curriculum. She has also enjoyed working with Cambridge County Council and the NHS to deliver health and wellbeing learning programmes across the county. Most recently, Denise has been a Child and Family Worker in a large Fenland primary school, working with both the pupils and parents to support their social, emotional and wellbeing needs.
Caroline Jupp - School Effectiveness Officer (Inclusion)
Caroline joined DEMAT in January 2019 as School Effectiveness Officer for Inclusion. She qualified as a teacher in 1993 and is an experienced SENCo and senior leader.
As an outstanding SENCo Caroline has inspired staff to recognise their responsibilities towards inclusion by identifying and leading training, creating rigorous and effective systems of monitoring, coaching and mentoring colleagues in order to support them in providing a high quality differentiated curriculum for all. Caroline is a qualified specialist teacher for Dyslexia. Her interest and passion to provide the best support and provision for learners with Specific Learning Difficulties led her to study Working Memory in greater depth and complete a dissertation and diploma in this area.
Caroline has taught across EYFS, KS1 and KS2 in small and large schools and understands the opportunities and challenges this can bring.
When asked about her position, Caroline said “I believe that every child is at the core of their own learning and every child deserves the best possible education. In order to achieve well, their specific needs must be identified accurately, and additional help that is sharply focussed planned and implemented. I am excited to be joining DEMAT which has ‘inclusion’ at its heart”
Outside of work, Caroline shares her enjoyment of Cornwall with her family and she look forward to bracing walks on the beach and investigating the wide variety of National Trust properties.
Sarah Reeson - Administrator (Inclusion)
Sarah joined DEMAT in July 2018 in the role of Inclusion Administrator. She previously worked as the School Administrator in a local primary school for 17 years, where she was also the Staff Governor. Sarah has two grown up children and enjoys keeping fit and cooking (though she says, the two don’t always go that well together!).
Diane Floyd - Administrative Co-ordinator
Diane joined DEMAT in January 2018 as Administrative Co-ordinator, after temping with us for a short time. Having worked for several years in a commercial background in administrative and PA roles for mainly consultancy firms in and around Cambridge, she is now enjoying the much shorter commute to Ely. If you need anyone on your pop quiz team, she is a very useful asset…..well, at least for 1950s to 1990s!
